2023 Obelisco Sauvignon Blanc
AVA: Columbia Valley
Blend: 76% Sauvignon Blanc, 24% Semillon
Vineyards: Gamache and Dionysus
Case Production: 190 cases
Aging: 6 months in French Oak (25% new)
Tasting Notes: This wine shows classic Sauvignon Blanc aromas of lemon curd, orange blossom, and a hint of toasty oak. On the palate, Meyer lemon carries through and is accompanied by the riper notes from the Semillon including fresh melon, fig, and a subtle savory note. This wine is medium bodied and shows balanced freshness and ripeness.
Cellaring: This classic Bordeaux style white wine is lively and fresh and meant to be enjoyed within the first 3 years. However, if you enjoy aged white wines, this wine has plenty of acidity and concentration to last in your cellar for up to 7 years.
Production: The Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon were picked on September 16th and were pressed together, and the juice was fermented in a combination of older barriques (225L barrels) and new demi-muids (600L barrels). The fermentation took place over 2 weeks and was kept cool to maintain the fruity aromas. The natural acidity in the grapes was particularly high in 2024, so the wine underwent Malo-lactic fermentation to reduce the perception of acidity and produce better overall balance. After ML fermentation, the wine was aged on the full lees for 6 months to build texture and harmony.
Harvest: The 2024 growing season started off cool, but there was a nice heat spike in May. June remained mild and vineyards were on track with the 20-year average. There were a few stretches throughout the summer over 100oF, but generally, it was a mild growing season. Harvest began about 7-10 days later than normal, and natural acidity levels were higher than average. September and October continued to be pleasant allowing for slow and measured ripening. The 2024 wines show freshness and opulence and should be considered a classic vintage.
