2022 Obelisco Estate Nefer Red Blend

Blend: 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 8% Malbec

AVA: Red Mountain

Vineyards: 85% Obelisco, 15% Scooteney Flats 

Bottling: 1,140 cases, 750ml

Alcohol: 14.5%

Aging: 22% new oak; 86% French, 14% Hungarian

Tasting Notes: The inaugural release of this wine shows all the classic characteristics of a Bordeaux-style blend. The Cabernet provides structure, black cherry, blackberry fruit, and a hint of capsicum. The Merlot lends notes of raspberry and red cherry while adding freshness and grace to the wine. Lastly, the Malbec gives fruit aromas of plums and violets, and it provides a smooth velvety finish. This wine shows the approachable side of Red Mountain fruit.

Cellaring: Crafted for both early enjoyment and graceful aging, this Red Mountain Red Blend is ready to drink upon release, yet structured enough to evolve beautifully. With balanced tannins and acidity, it will continue to develop for 3–7 years, rewarding those who choose to wait.

Production: The fruit for this wine comes primarily from Obelisco Vineyard, however, 15% of the blend is Merlot from Scooteney Flats vineyard just half a mile from Obelisco Vineyard. The wines were fermented warm to enhance the ripe fruit character and the wines were aged for 20 months in a combination of French and Hungarian oak.

Harvest notes: The 2022 growing season began with a cold, wet winter, delaying bud break after an April blizzard. A cool spring kept the season two to three weeks behind, but warm October weather provided ideal ripening conditions. The result: wines with balance, finesse, and beautifully structured fruit.
